Welcome to Whitby Yacht Club

Established in 1932 Whitby Yacht Club provides a full programme of sailing and powerboating throughout the season, April to October.

There is a friendly and adventurous cruising section with racing catered for by a wide-ranging series of competitions and events.

Whitby Yacht Club prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere and social scene, making it the perfect place to enjoy sailing and powerboating on the Yorkshire Coast.

Our clubhouse is located in an enviable position on Pier Road above the RNLI Museum providing unsurpassed harbour and sea views.

Whitby is situated on the North East Yorkshire Coast. It is well known for its historical connections to Captain James Cook the famous explorer, and William Scoresby, a whaling captain and inventor of the crow's nest and last but certainly not least Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula which has its opening chapters set in Whitby.

If you are interested in getting on the water then joining a yacht club is probably a good plan.

Firstly you don’t have to own a boat. Members with boats are constantly looking for crew to assist them go racing or cruising.

At Whitby YC you can join our WhatsApp Crew Finder group where skippers post their need for crew and equally crew can post their availability. This will enable you to get on the water without joining the club. You can enter up to four WYC events before joining the club. If you want more information on this then contact the vice Commodore. vice.comm@whitbyyachtclub.com

If you have younger family members who are more interested in starting in dinghies then we have a dinghy storage yard at Sandsend and good relationships with Scaling Dam that can offer their courses at discouts.

When you join the club we will try and meet your needs by getting you involved in the activities that best align to your skills, experience and ambitions. Joining one of the Clubs WhatsApp groups that are directed at Racing and Cruising under power or sail will help you get involved.

Learning something new, or brush up on some skills this winter with WYC Training.

The club can offer the following RYA shore-based theory courses during the close season. Note, all training will be delivered in the clubhouse and the courses will be programmed once the demand is known.

Students must have successfully completed Day Skipper Theory and Practical courses. The cost to members is £240 plus RYA training materials.

If any members are interested in or have questions about undertaking one of these courses during the close season 2024/25, please contact our RYA Principal, Stephen Upright, at training@whitbyyachtclub.com before the end of October.

Whitby Yacht Club does not run RYA practical courses but we can signpost you to other centres that do. Some of our members have completed practical courses at nearby Hartlepool and as far away as the Canaries.
