Whitby Yacht Club Racing TCFs

Time Correction Factors (TCFs)

TCFs are calculated from various measurements of the yacht’s hull and sails taken by the Club Measurement’s Officer under the North East Rating Rule (NERR) system. (See below for more details). TCFs are used to allow various sizes and types of yachts to compete on an even playing field. Unlike some systems the crew’s ability is not taken into account.

Key to table of Time Correction Factors (TCFs) using North East Rating Rule (NERR)

NERR = Handicap where Spinnakers can be used

NERR (White Sail) = Handicap using only Main Sail & Jib or Genoa

* = Handicap used for Whitby Yacht Club events

How to calculate race results:

The results of a race are determined by comparing the corrected times for each boat with the least time being the race winner, the next least second place and so on for each boat completing in the race.

The corrected time (CT) for each boat is calculated by multiplying its elapsed time (ET), that is the time it took to complete the race, by its handicap (H) i.e. CT = ET x H

A simple example: Boat A; ET = 60 mins, H = 1.09 Boat B; ET = 68 mins, H = 0.88

CT for A = ET (60) x H (1.09) = 65.4 mins (65 mins 24 secs)

CT for B = ET (68) x H (0.88) = 59.84 mins (59 mins 50.4 secs)

Therefore, Boat B is the winner even though its elapsed time was longer.

For Boat A to have won it would have needed Boat B to finish almost 15 mins after it.

North East Rating Rule (NERR) http://www.nerr.org.uk/

The North East Rating Rule (NERR) is a system of measurement to produce ratings for offshore yachts. These ratings when combined with a time allowance system yield handicaps, which permit yachts of various sizes and types to race together.  N.E.R.R. through its voluntary Rating Officer, and Measurement Officers appointed by the participating yacht clubs are responsible for the management of the North East Rating Rule.

The North East Rating Rule adopts similar methods and procedures as IRC and for yacht measurement complies with the ISAF Equipment Rules of Sailing, however, there is no absolute correlation to, participation or, collaboration with IRC and/or RORC, Rating Office.”  Both are independent rules for use as either body shall see fit.

TCFs are calculated from various measurements of the boats hull and sails taken by the Club Measurement’s Officer. Further details can be found http://www.nerr.org.uk/documents
