Whitby Yacht Club runs a full racing programme, for cruiser-racer yachts and Squib keelboats, from mid-April through to October. We are a friendly club and often have crewing vacancies, please check out the get on to the water page. We also welcome any new yachts and crews, whether new to racing and those with experience. Please go to the membership page for more details.

The WYC fleet is made up of 2 classes;-

Class A is for the faster yachts - most boats in this class are around 32 feet long. The boats to beat in recent years have been an X-302 and Sigma 33’s, others competing include Beneteau First 32s5, Feeling 326. Racing using the NERR handicap system (www.nerr.org.uk) most of these rate within 1 minute per hour so competition is close. At the top end of the handicap the fleet goes all the way up to a J120.

Class B contains a mix of slightly slower yachts, again racing using NERR handicaps. The fleet contains several IOR style boats such as Starlight 30 (regular winners), Verl 900’s as well smaller boats such as Sonatas - which have been very successful. Also included in class B for the regular series races are the Squib keelboats. Squibs have raced at Whitby since the 1970s and are well proven in the bay.

We have a variety of races, as well as “round the cans” races in the bay there are coastal races, pursuit races, virtual mark races and some regatta style windward-leeward events. Adjusted handicap events make sure everyone has a chance.
