Learning something new, or brush up on some skills this winter with WYC Training
The club offers heavily discounted RYA shore-based theory courses during the close season.
Essential Navigation and Seamanship
16-hour course for people new to the sport, delivering basic knowledge of charts and navigation and an introduction to safety at sea. No prior knowledge is assumed. The cost to members is £65 plus the necessary RYA course materials.
Day Skipper Theory
40 hours of classroom training and 3 hours of exams. The course aims to provide the background knowledge needed to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day. Some practical sea experience is essential.
Yachtmaster Theory
40 hours of classroom training and 7 hours of exams. The course aims to provide the background knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on a coastal passage by day and night. Students must have successfully completed Day Skipper Theory and Practical courses.
If any members are interested in or have questions about undertaking one of these courses, please contact our RYA Principal, Stephen Upright, at training@whitbyyachtclub.com before the end of October.
Whitby Yacht Club does not run RYA practical courses but we can signpost you to other centres that do. Some of our members have completed practical courses at nearby Hartlepool and as far away as the Canaries.
Don’t wait have a go now by contacting either rc.race@whitbyyachtclub.com or rc.cruise@whitbyyachtclub.com today.
Note, all training will be delivered in the clubhouse and the courses will be programmed once the demand is known.
